History
ssociated Black Charities is a not-for-profit federation of health and human service
agencies. It was founded in 1982 to assist in the support, financially and otherwise,
of organizations which promote the social welfare and health of the African American
community of New York City and to advocate for the equitable distribution of the
philanthropic dollars generated annually in New York City. Associated Black Charities'
mission is to promote the delivery of quality health and human services to African
Americans through a system of voluntary community-based organizations.
Associated Black Charities is a federation of 14
member agencies that deliver health and human services in the five boroughs
of New York City. Services include basic needs such as meals for the elderly,
shelter for the homeless, medical and mental health services, emergency food and
shelter, protective care for children and families who are at risk, counseling
for those who are troubled and rehabilitation for substance abusers. Member agencies
also provide enrichment programs that include day care for children, senior care
for the elderly, after school tutoring and leadership training for youth, career
counseling for job seekers, youth employment and job training and other services
that further the long-term development of the African American community.
Associated Black Charities provides support to its member agencies through
financial assistance in the form of annual grants and through technical assistance
to advance the development of their programs and the efficient management of their
organizations. Since its inception, Associated Black Charities has provided over
$5 million in grants to its member agencies.
Associated Black Charities' revenues come from fundraising activities, the
major source being Associated Black Charities' trademark Black History Makers
Awards Dinner in February of each year.
Associated Black Charities is governed by a Board of Directors, comprising
corporate executives, professionals, educators and community leaders.
